Created: 2014-03-05Last modified: 2014-03-05
This article is designed for users who do not have Carlson Xport or Carlson Survey. If you have one of these programs, you can click Tools / Geoid Manager or Survey / Data Collectors / "Prepare Geoid for SurvCE" then skip to Step #8 below.

GEOID12A is a refined hybrid model of the geoid in the United States and other territories, which supersedes the previous models GEOID09, GEOID06, GEOID03, GEOID99

***PLEASE NOTE: Changes from the original Geoid 2012 model from NGS impacted regions in the states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. No other states were affected by this Geoid 2012A update.

Here are the steps for creating a Geoid 2012A file for your Carlson SurvCE data collector:

1) Click the link below to download the file "Geoid2012A_rev2.zip" to your desktop:
Carlson Geoid 2012A

2) Extract this zipped file into its own Folder on your Desktop

3) If possible connect your data collector to the Computer
***Please Note: If necessary you can still create a *.GSF geoid file without having a data collector connected

4) Open this unzipped "Geoid2012A" folder we created in Step # 2 then double-click the "SurvCom.exe" file to run SurvCom 1.57
  a. Click OK to any Errors or warnings that are displayed
  b. click OK to launch the Connection Wizard
  c. click the Icon to indicate the connection you are using on your Data Collector
  d. Follow the prompts to get connected

5) After your connected make sure your "Remote Data Path" in the upper right is set for your normal Data folder where you keep your jobs {i.e. - "Program FilesSurvCEData" or "SystemCFData" or "C_driveData"}. If its not set properly double-click the "Up Folder" or the foldernames on the right side to navigate to your normal Data folder where you keep your CRD coordinate files for your jobs.

6) Once your set for the proper "Remote Path" in the upper right corner Click the Geoid button in the bottom right corner

7) To set the "Geoid Grid Files Directory" Click the select button in the upper right and navigate to the "Geoid2012A" directory on your desktop you installed the Geoid Grids. Left-click the "Carlson2012A" folder to highlight it then click OK.

8) Set the "Geoid Type" pulldown to "Geoid 2012" then type in the Latitude & Longitude, Grid Size and file name that you want.

We recommend making the size 180 miles or 3 degrees {this will create a Geoid file with roughly an 80mile Radius however we do allow up to 300 miles in size for roughly a 140 mile radius}. Make sure to type in a unique geoid name that relates to the location its centered on for the Lat / Long you used at the bottom such as the City Name and 2012A for the Geoid model {i.e. - "BostonMA2012A" or "Maysville2012A"}.

9) Click OK to create the Geoid grid file and copy it to the data collector

10) After it is finished copying - On the data collector tap Close in the upper right corner for 9pin then tap the Equip tab / Tap Localization / tap the GPS tab / tap "Geoid File" button / select the file we just created / Tap OK / Tap OK
