Title: Procedure for complete reinstall
Created: 2004-03-03Last modified: 2024-03-12

This applies to Carlson Takeoff R1 product only.

SYMPTOM:

Carlson Takeoff does not function properly after re-install.

CAUSE:

Carlson Takeoff R1 is using Microsoft Windows Installer and on the re-install the latter fails to install or update certain parts of the program because it thinks it does not need to.

RESOLUTION:

The solution seems to be to do complete un-install and then manually clean up the remaining files and registry settings.

  1. IMPORTANT! Backup any personal data files and drawings. Most of them would reside in DATA and WORK subfolders of Carlson Takeoff (typically C:\Program Files\Carlson Takeoff R1).
  2. Full un-install of Carlson Takeoff:
    1. User can try to do this with regular un-install via Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs. If that fails or does not seem to help after the whole procedure is completed, try Option B.
    2. Insert Carlson Takeoff CD. Cancel any installation dialogs.
      1. Open Command Prompt by clicking Start → Run, typing CMD (COMMAND if running Windows 9X), clicking OK.
      2. Assuming your CD is drive D, type D: then press Enter. You will see D:\> prompt.
      3. Type the following for Windows 2k or XP (assuming your Windows is in C:\Windows)
        C:\Windows\System32\msiexec /x SITE.msi
or type the following for Windows 9X (assuming your Windows is in C:\Windows)
        C:\Windows\SYSTEM\msiexec /x SITE.msi
press Enter to continue. Confirm the uninstall when dialog appears.
  3. After uninstall is complete (BE VERY CAREFUL IN THE NEXT STEPS!)
    1. Run Registry Editor by clicking Start → Run, type REGEDIT, click OK.
    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Carlson Software\Carlson Takeoff\R2004\SITE-6:409. With the SITE-6:409 key highlighted right-click and Delete. Confirm.
    3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Carlson Software\Carlson Takeoff\R2004\SITE-6:409. With the SITE-6:409 key highlighted, right-click and Delete. Confirm.
    4. Close Registry Editor.
    5. In Windows Explorer navigate to and delete the following folders
      (these are default names):
      C:\Program Files\Carlson Takeoff R1 (delete 'Carlson Takeoff R1' folder)
    6. If you do not see some of these folders you will need to access Folder Options under Tools in the menu, click on View tab and set "Hidden Files and Folders" to "Show hidden files and folders"
      • C:\Documents and Settings\Your_user_name\Application Data\Carlson Software\Carlson Takeoff R1 (delete 'Carlson Takeoff R1' folder)
      • C:\Documents and Settings\Your_user_name\Local Settings\Application Data\Carlson Software\Carlson Takeoff R1 (delete 'Carlson Takeoff R1' folder)
Note: On older versions of Windows you may have to look in c:\Windows\Profiles folder instead of C:\Documents and Settings for the last two folders above.
  4. Now install Carlson Takeoff again. It should install correctly this time.
