Carlson Software and HydroCAD Form Alliance

Carlson Hydrology 2009 to include a complete 10-node HydroCAD system

MAYSVILLE, Ky., U.S.A. (April 21, 2008) --  A new alliance between Carlson Software Inc. and HydroCAD Software Solutions, LLC, was revealed at the Carlson Silver Anniversary User Conference, held April 14 and 15 in Lexington, Ky. HydroCAD is a Computer Aided Design tool used by civil engineers for modeling stormwater runoff.

“HydroCAD is such a standard in hydrology and hydraulics design that we are really pleased to announce that the basic HydroCAD module will be included with Carlson Hydrology ’09,” said Bruce Carlson, president and founder of Carlson Software. “We will link to HydroCAD and will even conform our methods more closely to those of HydroCAD in upcoming builds of Carlson Hydrology.”

Carlson Hydrology, a part of the Carlson Civil Suite of solutions for civil engineers and designers, offers CAD-based runoff calculations and structure sizing from ponds to channels to pipes and includes full pipe network design and hydraulic flow analysis.

“Because Carlson Hydrology offers DTM-based and layer-based design for time of concentration and runoff coefficientsdirectly from CAD drawings, it is a perfect fit with HydroCAD, feeding precise input data to the HydroCAD entry screens,” adds Carlson.

“This is an alliance to take advantage of the strengths of both companies,” said Peter Smart, developer and CEO of HydroCAD. “Carlson and HydroCAD is a combination that will really work, helping users save time on repetitious data entry, increasing their accuracy, and giving them access to HydroCAD’s extensive rainfall libraries and stormwater chamber specifications.”

Smart hosted a well-attended class at the user conference, held to celebrate Carlson Software’s 25th anniversary. The class covered a brief overview of hydrology fundamentals followed by a presentation on HydroCAD’s flow analysis, reach design and detention pond sizing, for both surface and underground structures.

Phase one of the integration of the two popular products will be the inclusion of HydroCAD with Carlson Hydrology 2009, which is expected to be released on or before May 1, 2008. The second phase will be the development of linkage between the two products to move data automatically between the two solutions.

Both Carlson and Smart emphasized that this is an alliance and not an acquisition. HydroCAD and Carlson will continue as separate companies. HydroCAD will continue to be sold directly as it is now, but the “Carlson Edition” will also be bundled with Carlson Hydrology 2009.

HydroCAD was first developed in 1986 by Peter Smart and is the focus of HydroCAD Software Solutions of Chocorua, N.H.  It has become the most-used Hydrology and Hydraulics software in the United States, with more than 20,000 installations.  For more information on HydroCAD, visit www.hydrocad.net or call 800-927-7246.

Carlson Software, an independent company founded in 1983, has been developing software that runs on top of AutoCAD since 1987.
