Steve Santovasi to present ' From RTK to Mobile: High Accuracy Municipal Infrastructure Data Collection' at Esri®/ACSM Survey Summit

SAN DIEGO, Calif., U.S.A. — Steve Santovasi, GISP, will be a presenter at the Survey Summit, hosted by Esri and the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) in San Diego, Calif., July 7 – 12. Santovasi is a 2011 Esri® Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award winner in recognition of his outstanding work in GIS technology.

Under the heading of “High Accuracy GIS,” Santovasi’s subject will be: “From RTK to Mobile: High Accuracy Municipal Infrastructure Data Collection,” to be held on Saturday, July 9, from 8 a.m. until noon at the Summit.

Santovasi, who works with Carlson SurvCE data collection, Carlson Survey office design software and ArcGIS10, will illustrate how incorporating the strengths of land surveyors, engineers and GIS professionals together produces an incrementally better GIS system. He utilized this method as the administrator of the extensive GIS system for the city of Waterbury, Conn.

“Having land surveyors and survey crews collecting the data to be used allows for the quality of the geographic locations within the GIS system to be greatly improved,” says Santovasi. “The GIS professional can concentrate more on system functionality, attribute data and web presentation.”

Santovasi will illustrate how to set up workflow so that desktop mapping, web mapping and mobile mapping are updated seamlessly without the need to continuously alter the map creation documents and html files.

“The most important aspect of this process,” notes Santovasi, “is that the quality of all datasets built from RTK-GPS-collected points increases GIS accuracy so it can be used at any scale.”

All attendees at the Survey Summit are invited to attend to learn more about this high accuracy GIS, which is in demand more and more from municipalities and at large constructions sites.
