Built
on AutoCAD:
AutoCAD from
Autodesk is
the foundation
for Carlson
Civil. After
over 15 years
of developing
applications
inside AutoCAD,
Carlson Software
knows how to
work well with
AutoCAD. Carlson
Civil gives
you a choice
from a range
of AutoCAD platforms.
Carlson Civil
runs inside
AutoCAD 2007,
2006, 2005,
2004, 2002,
2000i and 2000
as well as AutoCAD
Map 3D 2007,
2006, 2005,
2004, R6, R5,

Technological
Innovation:
Carlson Civil
is leading the
industry with
breakthrough
features in
survey, road
design and hydrology.
Survey has key
routines from
advanced network
least-squares
processing in
SurvNet to smart
point and annotation
labels with
rules for overlap
prevention.
In road design,
RoadNet creates
a dynamic 3D
model of multiple
roads including
intersections
and cul-de-sacs.
The storm sewer
network
program offers
true “TIN-based”
hydrology. It
combines
hydraulic flow
analysis with
structure layout
and surface
watershed modeling
to automate
calculation
of drainage
areas along
with the weighted
runoff coefficient
and time of
concentration. |
| 4 |
Smart
and Simple Civil
Objects:
Carlson Civil
has dynamic
civil data objects
for elements
such as points,
centerlines,
profiles, cross-sections
and sewer networks.
These objects
remember their
display properties
and can be setup
to update automatically
or by explicit
command when
the source data
changes. By
attaching extended
entity data
to standard
AutoCAD entities,
Carlson Civil
creates these
dynamic objects
without introducing
custom entities.
Using standard
AutoCAD entities
allows regular
drafting on
the entities
and keeps it
simple for sharing
drawings with
other companies. |
| 5 |
Full
Project Cycle:
Carlson Software
offers the most
complete software
solution from
surveying to
engineering
to construction.
For field data
collection,
Carlson SurvCE
runs in Windows
CE on handheld
devices and
Carlson Field
runs in AutoCAD
on ruggedized
computers. In
the office,
there’s
Carlson Civil
for the design
and drafting
along with Carlson
Takeoff for
construction
estimating.
Back to the
field for stakeout,
Carlson SurvCE
and Carlson
Field use the
design data.
Then Carlson
Grade takes
the design model
onto equipment
for machine
control. At
each step in
this process,
the same data
model is used
which skips
re-work
and data conversions.
For instance,
Carlson SurvCE
and Carlson
Civil have the
same raw data
file and field-to-finish
coding. These
products are
all developed
in-house and
share similar
user-interfaces
which simplifies
support and
training across
products. |

Independent:
Independence
fosters innovation.
Our vision is
to stay independent,
and serve the
industry by
serving the
end-user, from
the hyper-efficient,
one-man survey
firm to large
government agencies
like the Office
of Surface Mining.
Growing to sell
out or go public
is the strategy
of Wall Street,
where the end-user
is secondary
to the internal
goals of the
business. We
take the opposite
view. Success
can only be
measured in
the quality
of the product
and the satisfaction
of the individuals
who use the
product, and
we will never
give up the
freedom to take
customer input
and deliver
on better, improved
software that
“does
more”.
Carlson Software
is committed
to remain an
independent
company, free
to provide service,
free to innovate,
supportive of
our corporate
partners and
dealers and
focused on our
customers. There
are very few
companies like
ours left in
this age of
consolidation
and “vertical”,
manufacturer-driven
solutions. We
believe that
the lateral
suite of all-purpose
software, provided
by an independent
software company
integrating
all applications
from office
to field, is
the best way
to provide service
to our industry. |
| 7 |
Largest
Third Party
in Market:
Carlson Software
is the largest
3rd party developer
in the civil/survey
software market.
And Carlson
Software is
growing fast,
averaging 35%
sales growth
per year for
the last five
years. |
| 8 |
Data
Compatibility:
From data collection
interfaces to
cross-section
conversions,
Carlson Civil
provides data
interoperability
with many other
packages. Carlson
Civil supports
the industry
standard LandXML
format for civil
data exchange
as well as the
nearly all file
formats of the
total station/GPS
manufacturers.
With all these
conversions
combined with
running inside
AutoCAD, the
market
leading CAD
platform, Carlson
Civil covers
a lot of bases. |
| 9 |
Flexible
Project Setup:
Carlson Civil
project setup
supports user-defined
project subfolders
along with control
over default
file locations
by data type.
Alternatively,
project setup
can be turned
off. Then drawings
can be simply
opened and worked
on with the
data files stored
in the drawing
folder. |
10 |
No
Forced Upgrades:
Carlson Software
is continually
working on improvements
for Carlson
Civil with new
releases on
an annual schedule.
The new features
in these releases
are customer-driven
and we aim to
maintain consistent
data formats
and workflows.
When the new
releases are
available, we
expect customers
to upgrade based
on the merits
of the new features.
As stated under
support, Carlson
Sofware supports
all our products
for all versions
and we have
no product retirement. |

History: Evolution
to
Carlson
Civil |
|
|
|
| |
Carlson
Civil is
a new product
offering
from Carlson
Software
addressing
the site,
subdivision,
road and
hydrology
design needs
of the civil
engineer.
Carlson Civil
is new, but
it is the
outgrowth
of a well-established
product line
dating back
to 1983.
It is the
third “makeover” of
core products
from Carlson.
The first
product that
established
the company
was Surveyor
1, a DOS-based
survey solution
that included
plotting
and digitizing,
as well as
a full set
of COGO functions.
With the
advent of
AutoCad 10
in the early
1990s, Carlson
Software
ported all
of its features
to work in
Windows inside
AutoCad,
and supplemented
the survey
routines
with contouring,
volumes,
subdivision
design, sections,
profiles
and a complete
set of roading
features.
This second
incarnation
was known
as SurvCADD.
SurvCADD
became a
favorite
solution
for surveying
companies,
was utilized
by many civil
departments,
and with
the addition
of mining
features,
came to dominate
many sectors
of the mine
design and
planning
industry.
With
the continued
addition
of civil
engineering
and construction-oriented
features,
SurvCADD
began to
outlive both
its name
and its survey-based structure.
Since 2000,
Carlson Software
has emphasized
development
of a new
set of advanced
civil engineering
features
for 3D road
network design,
DTM-based
sewer network
design and
site development.
This has
culminated
in the May
26, 2006
release of
Carlson Civil.
Carlson
Civil is
a complete
solution
composed
of 4 comprehensive
modules:
Carlson Survey,
Site-Road,
Hydrology
and GIS.
Built into
this suite
of products
are all the
tools for
the civil
engineer:
data collection,
network least
squares,
field-to-finish,
subdivision
and site
design, annotation, road
and utility corridor
design, road
networks
with 3D intersections
and cul-de-sacs, runoff calcs
from TIN
models, pipe
design based
on surface
elevations
with flexible
inlet and
structure
placement,
real-world
flow calculations
and “final-sheet” cross
section and
profile drafting,
all responsive
to dynamic
editing.
Carlson
Civil is
designed
for civil
engineers
by civil
engineers,
based on
23 years
of experience
in the software
industry
serving this
market. Carlson
Civil takes
the lessons
of these
years in
civil feature
development,
adds in the
comprehensive
experience
in the overlapping
markets of
survey, construction
and mining,
and distills
the highest
level of
robust automation
and ease-of-use
of any civil
design solution
available
today. |
