3D Model Building & BIM Track

Time, Class Titles, Descriptions, and Instructors (subject to change)

Monday, November 8

8-9:45AM/Surface Modeling Basics/Jennifer DiBona -- In this session we will be discussing the theory and algorithms of surface preparation in Carlson Construction and Takeoff. We will show varying data types appropriate for creating surfaces and discuss the ramifications of data types. An example of how to prepare a surface will be shown and the settings will be explained.  Following that will be a demonstration on how to preform QA/QC anaylsis to ensure surface integrity.

10:15AM-Noon/Carlson & BIM/Felicia Provencal -- Have your clients approached you asking about BIM? Does your competition talk about BIM? Do you want to know where to get started with BIM? This session will introduce you to the concepts involved with Building Information Modeling and how Carlson solutions can help your firm with projects that involved BIM. You will learn which features of the Carlson Civil, Survey, Construction, and Takeoff products can create, analyze, and export BIM-ready files. You will also learn to create and work with data that goes beyond the limits of BIM.

1-2:45PM/3D Model Building for Roads/Walt Liles -- Carlson software includes powerful tools for designing and modeling different aspects of road design, from new construction to road widening and repaving. This class is a technical, in-depth look at these tools and how they should be used to create detailed, accurate road models. This includes guidance on how to implement the unique RoadNet feature that models designs that incorporate multiple alignments, intersections, and cul-de-sacs. Road design features such as multi-surface templates and superelevation are discussed as well.

3:15-5PM/3D Model Building for Sites/David Sanford -- There is more to a site model than just the top surface!  Learn how to create detailed 3D models of any project site including subsurfaces, utility trenching, and building features in this intermediate level class. The tools available in the Carlson Construction and Takeoff products can be used to generate full-featured models of complex site grading that can be used with any BIM system, as well as the basis for implementing machine control systems, advanced layout techniques, and construction management.

Tuesday, November 9

8-9:45AM/Basic Model Building/Mike Hyman -- When dealing with Building Information Modeling (BIM), one of the key components is the model. This class shows you the basics of how to model various elements of a design project include surfaces, roads, and underground utilities.  Emphasis is placed on creating accurate models that can go straight to construction, and how to verify the models are indeed correct.  This class will also include a discussion of the various types of data that can go into creating a model, and the different types of uses for the finished product.

10:15AM-Noon/Data Prep for Machine Control/Marco Cecala -- This session will cover how to take the varying range of source data provided by Engineers and turn them into 3D Models used in Estimating, Layout, and/or Machine Control. Example files will be used from "Real World" projects and will encompass a variety of residential developments. Special emphasis will be made on different methods of elevating line work into 3D, and also how to adjust an initial 3D model for greater accuracy.
